I have to say that I didn’t find this book as helpful as I had hoped it would be when I requested it for review. Yes, Dr. Devi hit on exactly the things that make both men and women stressed in our everyday lives, but the steps she suggested for us to take in order to correct these stressful issues are things that don’t seem too easily achievable. I honestly found the subject matter dry and even a task to continue reading at certain points. I also felt the list of suggestions Dr. Devi offered at the end of the book for her readers to start incorporating into their daily lives just seemed unobtainable in many ways. Sadly, this wasn’t a book that I walked away feeling that I took any pointers away with me and even if I did, I wouldn’t be able to make significant changes in my life with them no matter how hard I tried. Overall, I was disappointed that this book wasn’t what I expected it to be.
Dr. Devi is a neurologist and the director of the New York Memory and Healthy Aging Services. She is also a clinical associate professor at the NYU School of Medicine. In this book, she offers tips in which she feels every person could benefit from if they were to follow these stress relieving pointers exactly as she suggests. She believes if you make a conscious effort, these very pointers will make you an overall calm and relaxed individual.
When you are calm, your mind and body are in a state of focused awareness. You are in your “zone,” performing at your peak. Now, Dr. Gayatri Devi shows in A Calm Brain how you can cultivate this optimal mental and physical state by tapping into your body’s hard-wired natural relaxation system.
Our ancestors used the fight-or-flight mechanism to protect themselves from predators. We use it to fend off daily crises. In a world filled with too many toys, too much technology, and too many choices—how can we possibly keep up? Our bodies have been trained to react to the beeps and alarms of all our different technologies, be it the ever present cell phone, an angry text message, or a frantic voicemail. The result is chronic stress and a learned inability to relax.
With a warm, lucid voice, Dr. Devi shares stories from her medical practice of ordinary people—suffering from migraines, neck pain, gastrointestinal upsets, and sleep deprivation— trying to work through life’s difficulties. With practical advice she shows just how to promote a higher “vagal tone,” and delivers the best news yet, you don’t need more drugs. Here are the keys to more tranquil, productive, and enjoyable life.
Dr. Devi explores a paradigm shift in our understanding of the brain’s relaxation mechanisms. It is hard for our brains to talk our bodies into feeling calm, but our bodies have strong wiring that makes true enduring calm possible. The body does this through the vagus nerve, a powerful conduit that taps directly into our brain’s built-in relaxation system. This revolutionary science can transform your work life and your home life.
