Hannah Moore is a private investigator and has recently learnt that scary things do, in fact, go bump in the night. Hannah is a feisty, fun woman and a pleasure to meet. Her former business partner has been drawn into the dark world of vampires and the group that stop Killers, the Guardians. She has been asked by her friend to follow a Guardian to Baltimore to keep him safe during the day. Killers are vampires who feed off humanity and Guardians are vampires who attempt to keep humans safe.
Jules Gerard is a Guardian that has sworn he will never become a Killer; however, he is finding his temper stretched and fears that others could be in danger around him. The Killer who, brutally, made him a vampire has made himself known in Baltimore and Jules has decided to attempt to stop him. Jules and Hannah are drawn to one another and must fight Jules creator. They learn some shattering secrets of the leader of the Guardians, Eli, and his past. As they get closer, Jules must disclose his past and try to get rid of the shame he carries from it.
Secrets in the Shadows is the second in the Guardians of the Night series. Ms. Black writes a well-written, intense, book. It was a pleasure to read this book and I look forward to more from Ms. Black. The next book is Secrets on the Soul and it reunited Eli with someone from his past.
Vampires They hunt in every major city, hidden by the crowds, shielded by disbelief. They are Killers, and their prey is human. Not all vampires are Killers. The Guardians of the Night sacrifice the superior physical and psychic strength that comes with feeding on humans to protect them. But the Guardians walk a thin line, for even a single kill could leave them helplessly addicted to murder. Jules Gerard has vowed that he will never become a Killer. But when he discovers that the man who turned him into a vampire is dead and kicking in Baltimore, the allure of extra power is tempting. Standing in his way is a human, spitfire Hannah Moore, who has followed him to Baltimore to help him confront his past. Hannah doesn't seem to realize how dangerous vampires can beand despite his façade of disdain, Jules has a real soft spot for the petite P.I. Jules is going to have to choose: vengeance or love? Damnation or redemption?
