Dante is the Dranir of the Raintree, the King. The Raintree are a species who are human and more than human. They have special gifts and deadly enemies, the Ansara. Dante is a Fire-Master, able to control fire. He also owns numerous businesses, including the Casino and Hotel called "Inferno", in Reno. There he investigates a woman for cheating at cards, that woman is Lorna Clay. When he meets Lorna he realizes that she is gifted, she has special abilities, and he doesn't know is she is friend or enemy. Dante must ensure Lorna is not part of the Ansara. Dante is highhanded and powerful and used to getting his way when he meets Lorna, who balks at being under anyone's control.
Lorna Clay is a feisty, stubborn, funny woman, who needs to be in control and when she isn't, she rebels. Lorna has a special affinity for numbers and has been very lucky at the casinos when she finds herself at the attention of Dante. During their meeting a fire breaks out in the casino, a fire Dante is unable to control. He uses his and Lorna's power to save them and then finds that he can't let her go.
Dante must earn Lorna's trust once he determines that she is not Ansara. He gets her to agree to stay with him for a few days to learn skills to protect herself. Lorna quickly finds herself able to tell when danger is coming and starts to draw on those skills as the days pass. Both have to deal with their own personalities and their budding feelings for one another.
I found this book to be a very quick and enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance and this book will be going on my keeper shelf. Dante was a little overpowering and alpha in the beginning, however, what can one expect from a King? Lorna is a joy to get to know and I hope to see more of them in the rest of the series. Raintree: Inferno is the first book of three in the Raintree series. The other books are: Raintree: Haunted by Linda Winstead Jones and Raintree: Sanctuary by Beverly Barton.
Two hundred years after the Raintree clan defeated and abandoned them on a small Caribbean Island, the Ansara wizards are rising again to take on their bitterest foes. Despite their extraordinary powers and supernatural origin, the Raintree have largely blended into the modern world. They are bankers, cops, husbands, wives and lovers in the society of humankind. But now, from Nevada to North Carolina, the rejoined battle will measure the endurance of their people. It will test their loyalties and relationships. And it will force upon them all new lives they could barely have imagined before.
