Marcus comes to Aphrodite's Club one evening and notices a woman in a scarlet dress - her face veiled. His failed attempts to gain her interest warranted his departure until Aphrodite approached him on Portia's behalf. Portia's here to be held and feel like a woman again. Even after their passionate meetings Marcus doesn't know she's the widow of a national hero revered by the Queen and society, or the preacher's daughter he knew as a youth. He just knows he wants more so he hires someone to track her down.
Arnold believes as his dead father did that Briton is for the Brits and plots to kill the queen. Lara and Arnold, Portia's step daughter and son in law find out about her lusty activities and move into her home restricting her activities. She plans on leaving and the opportunity presents itself but Marcus shows. He's kidnapping her and takes her and her mother to Duval Hall, Marcus' inherited grounds.
Arnold, Lara, and the queen come to Duval Hall for Portia and there Arnold stages his assassination attempt on the Queen.
Sara Bennett has portrayed Portia as a woman not in control of her life. I don't see Portia's character development strong enough to substantiate her as a main character. The dramas throughout the story are too easily thwarted - the thrill of true conflict - thwarted too quickly. For a first reader of historical romance A Seduction in Scarlet may be a great weekend read. For the more experienced mature historical romance reader the premise has promise, but the characters lack punch.
One wicked night . . . Lady Portia Ellerslie, dearest confidante to Queen Victoria and a woman of impeccable breeding, normally wouldn't dream of dallying in Aphrodite's Club, London's most exclusive and erotic bordello. But one lonely night she finds something enticing about the idea of a wild encounter in the notorious hothouse. Donning a daring, dangerously low-cut scarlet dress and a veil to mask her identity, she arrives at the club ready to succumb to the torrid desires raging inside her . . . and is shocked to find herself gazing into the eyes of Marcus Worthorne, the man she swooned over at seventeen. Could lead to a lifetime of ecstasy . . . Back then, Marcus barely knew she was alive, but now he's about to make her most wanton fantasies come true. Portia's proper life is about to change forever . . . because for Marcus one night with the lady in red could never be enough.
