The Mistress Memoirs

A Boscastle Affairs Novel

Jillian Hunter continues to shine with The Mistress Memoirs. Fans will enjoy this latest Boscastle Family tale as prodigal son, Colin, returns home to claim vengeance against the man who murdered his father and make amends to the woman he left behind. Things get interesting when he kisses the wrong woman and finds himself smitten by the lovely lady. Ms. Hunter’s stories are well known for combining romance, humor and witty dialogue to captivate the readers and this one is no different. I was hooked from the first page.

Colin has finally returned to England to confront the man who killed his father. Despite being hurt that his first love is now the mistress of his enemy, Colin goes to warn her of the danger. Instead, he kisses the wrong woman and then has to save the household from a drunken mob set on evicting the scandalous madam. He then takes charge of his enemy’s home while he captivates the entire household with his irascible charm and commanding demeanor.

Years ago, a young Kate found herself on the street after being disgraced by a lecherous nobleman. Luckily, she was saved by Georgette, a notorious courtesan. She was given a position as governess to Georgettes children and is helping her to write her salacious memoirs. The two women became close and are fiercely loyal to each other. Imagine Kate’s surprise at learning that the madman who kissed her so passionately had a starring role in the first chapter of madam’s illustrious career. Colin recognizes that Kate is special and may be worth more than the vengeance he craves. So he starts his practiced seduction of the wary governess.

This is a typical romance, with Colin becoming smitten with Kate from their first kiss. However, Kate holds out a little longer against his romantic advances. She is afraid that in his quest for revenge Colin will abandon her as he did Georgette all those years ago. The good thing was that she succumbed to his charm early in the story instead of dragging it out forever.

The best part of the book was the humor. The outrageous antics of Georgette and the children provided plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. And the verbal sparring between Kate and Colin was priceless. Even Georgette, with her Marilyn Monroe personality, was good for quite a few chuckles. The humor was classic Hunter and reminiscent of her earlier books.

This story brings to an end the long running questions concerning the death of Colin, Sebastian and Gabriel’s father. The mystery part of the story was easy to figure out as the clues were artfully placed throughout the book.

The tantalizing love scenes were steamy and barely short of erotic. Definitely not for the faint of heart. After all, Colin is a Boscastle and wicked as can be.

Jillian Hunter has done it again. As usual, she has given readers a perfect blend of romance and humor that will intrigue and titillate until the last page. The Mistress Memoirs is romantic and fun and brimming with witty dialogue. I'd recommend it not only to devoted Hunter fans but to all historical romance fans.
