Highland Master is the 19th book in Hannah Howell's incredible highland series featuring the Murray Family and their extended kin. Unbelievable ... right? This author must be doing something right. Something so good that it keeps the readers coming back for more. Nineteen wonderful books in this saga, and still going strong. Each story is unique and just a bit better than the last one. I've been hooked since reading the very first book in this series and falling in love with highland romance books. So I have Hannah Howell and her Murray Family series to thank for my love of highland romance. I just can't ever get enough! Highland Master is pure classic Hannah Howell, a beautifully written romance that will hold the reader enraptured until the last page is turned.
The story features Triona McKee and Brett Murray. Their lives are entwined when Triona's cousin, Arianna from Highland Avenger, comes for a visit. She brings along some of her kin, including Sir Brett. There is that instant spark between Triona and Brett, but they try to ignore it for a while. Neither of them are looking for a relationship. Brett is haunted by the ghost of his past. Just as past experience with men has left Triona looking at all men with jaded eyes. It is apparent that something is wrong on the estate, so Brett and his men set out to help Triona solve the problem. It's a big one. Lady Triona is being harassed by her neighbor, an arrogant man who likes to play dirty and wants to get his hands on her land. Her village has mostly been wiped out by one problem after another. Then further digging by Brett and the others reveal an even more insidious threat. I am telling you that this book was strewn with suspense and had one nasty villain.
Meanwhile, Brett and Triona give in to their attraction and begin a rather torrid affair. The drama is high as they have plenty of problems to overcome though. Aside from thwarting the greedy villain, they have to make some changes if they are to have a future together. Triona has gotten used to her freedom and might not want to give it up for a man. Brett is haunted by the ghost of his lost love. He has to overcome his guilt and find his own way before he can begin a life with Triona.
Hannah Howell did not disappoint with this one. The characters were wonderful, and they acted in a believable way. Friendship first.... the good stuff came later. All of the characters were great. Triona's little daughter was simply adorable and almost stole the show. The story had an element of suspense that had me anticipating the outcome, and kept me turning those pages. I loved the authentic dialogue and the vivid descriptions as well. It made me feel like I was right there with the characters. Howell always does a great job with that in her books.
So here it is, this book was absolutely a joy to read. Once started, I could not put it down until the end. As I've said, it is part of a wonderful series, but it also a book that stands on its own. So if you are new to the series, you can still enjoy this book all by itself. Readers who enjoy highland romance will love it. Hannah Howell fans will adore it, and hunger for more. Just like me. I am recommending this book to everyone.
