Against the Edge

The Raines of Wind Canyon, #8

Against the Edge is book 8 in The Raines of Wind Canyon series from the wonderfully talented Kat Martin. I've been hooked on this exciting series since the first book and am always excited about each new story. Martin never disappoints and each book only gets better. Still you're going to have a favorite... and for me it's always been the 1'st book, Against the Wind. That is until now. I got to say that Martin outdid herself with this one and it's my favorite story yet.

It has a great plot that was loaded with drama, suspense and action. The action started off with a bang when Claire showed up at Ben's door to give him a few facts. He has a secret son who has gone missing. Claire is a social worker and friends with the mother. She wanted to adopt the boy when his mom passed away. Things didn't work out that way and the boy, Sam, was in an unhappy situation. So he made some bad moves and put himself in danger. Ben is stunned at the news of a son he never knew about but he immediately goes into action to find him. His SEAL training and job connections make him the perfect man for the job. He's going to need that experience and all the help he can get as the plot takes some intriguing twists and turns. Ben and Claire were led on a cross country chase- from Cali to the Louisiana bayou - as they go against a redneck survivalist militia. Bullets were flying in scenes that were taut with suspense and had me on the edge of my seat.

The pages fairly sizzled with the sparks Ben and Claire were putting off. The love scenes got steamy and it happened fast. But the romantic relationship built at a slow simmer that made it more real to this reader. That's because Ben had some issues he needed to work through. He'd been betrayed and lied to and it was hard for him to trust women. He made some mistakes that were painful to read. Typical guy stuff and he came through in the end. Said the right things eventually.

For me the thing that set this story apart was how adept the writer was at showing the characters feelings. I got Ben's anger at the dual betrayal of his ex (the cheating and big secret). Even worse was how guilty he felt for being mad at her because she's dead. Who wants to be mad at a dead chick? It was real clear that Claire loved Sam and wanted him but that she felt she had let him down. Even weightier and a truly spectacular part of the story were Sam's feelings of grief and despair at the loss of his mom and later Claire. He didn't understand and felt like nobody wanted him. Then came the discovery that he had a father who wanted him and Claire was back in his life as well. I'm telling ya... the hope was a palpable emotion. Powerful stuff and very entertaining.

So I loved this book. It was a non-stop adrenaline rush with the action scenes, the suspense, and the sexy love scenes. For me it was the best yet in this series and I gobbled it up like chocolate.

Romantic suspense at its best!

Book Blurb for Against the Edge

A child he's never met. A danger he's never known.

That he's a father is news former navy SEAL Ben Slocum was not expecting. But once the initial shock wears off for the confirmed bachelor, he takes in the rest of what social worker Claire Chastain tells him: that his son is missing, abducted by a man who wants revenge against Claire and Sam's dead mother. And that Ben is now the child's only hope.

As Ben and Claire band together to track the two down, their concern for Sam draws them closer, each fighting feelings there's no time to explore. Because when their search takes them too close to Sam's abductor and his cohorts, the danger hits home—the son he's desperate to save, the woman he's desperate to love…. Ben's got one chance to take back what's his, and in one gunshot he could lose it all.
