Where Angels Rest

Mann Family

Where Angels Rest by Kate Brady has everything a good suspense novel should: A mystery, action-packed scenes, twists and turns, a spooky antagonist, interesting characters and chapter endings that keep you turning the pages. It’s a good mystery in this story – who is the killer and what is his motive? – and the writing is pretty damn impressive, too. I had a hard time putting this book down; it had me hooked from the very beginning! The story is really good and finding out the identity of the killer was a mind-blowing surprise. Once I knew who the killer was, I was shaking my head and saying, “No way!”

While there was one thing I didn’t like about the story (and I won’t say it here because I don’t want to give that away), I still really enjoyed reading this novel. It definitely kept me guessing and it had me on the edge of my seat. The character Erin is tough and smart, as is the sheriff, Nick, but Nick also has a soft side to him because he’s the single dad of a young daughter. I really felt for Nick, who had to raise his child alone after his wife’s murder many years ago. As a police officer, I could understand his frustration with himself for being unable to protect his wife from a man he was after when they lived in L.A. He’s angry at himself, feeling guilty and constantly haunted by the fact that the man who murdered his wife is still alive. Erin carries around a nightmare from her own past, too, but instead of dealing with it, she focuses all of her energy and attention – and ten years of her life – on trying to save her brother from execution. As I read this story, I kept wondering if her brother, Justin, really was innocent of murder and, if so, if he’d ever be freed.

Full of surprises and on-the-edge-of-your-seat scenes that were action-packed and exciting, Where Angels Rest was a novel that I really enjoyed reading. It was an amazing, unforgettable story that had me hanging on every word until the very end.

Ten years. That is how long psychologist Erin Sims has been fighting to prove that her brother is innocent of murder. Erin is convinced she knows who the real killer is, and after she tracks him down to rural Hopewell, Ohio, she ends up locking horns with Sheriff Nick Mann, who struggles with his own nightmare from the past and must now try to maintain the peace in his town. Then people start disappearing and bodies turn up that are obviously a result of the killer’s M.O., and Erin starts to wonder if the past is starting to repeat itself. Nick and Erin must race to find the killer – before they become the next victims.
