Solaris Rising 3

The New Solaris Book of Science Fiction

When picking up an anthology to read, I never know what to expect. I do know there are stories that fall under a theme or fit into a genre, but I never can predict just how far those stories will go to stretch the genre just a bit or take me on some kind of journey. Both of those experiences happened when I read the stories in Solaris Rising 3, an anthology of science fiction short stories. Not all of the stories in this book were ones that I enjoyed – in fact, I grew weary of a few of them that just didn’t grab me and skipped over them – but most of the stories in this book are definitely well worth checking out as far as good science fiction is concerned.

With a genre like science fiction, anything can happen. There is so much available to the sci-fi writer to explore in fiction – parallel universes, aliens, time travel and such – that any one of the stories that a reader begins after finishing a previous one can bring shock or surprise. There’s also different worlds to explore, and that’s what happened with some of the stories in this anthology. Also, one particular story took me on a journey by simply asking “what if?” about one of the great mysteries in our world. I enjoyed this story in particular, because it gave a nice sci-fi spin to one of the theories about it and left me thinking on whether it could actually be possible or not. And that right there is another reason why I enjoyed reading these stories: They made me think. They made me ponder, explore and study.

Solaris Rising 3 was a real treat to read for science fiction short stories. I commend the editor on putting together such a well-rounded combination of sci-fi stories from some very good sci-fi writers. This is a book I just may end up going back to a time or two later on, only to explore what might yet be out there among the stars.
