Scorpion Winter by Andrew Kaplan was the first “Scorpion” book I have read and it was the most amazing book ever that I am now going to find the other Scorpion books and read them all, too. I was particularly taken by the character Scorpion. He is exciting, mysterious, intelligent and strong. As a former CIA operative and raised as a fighter in the brutal Saudi desert, he is constantly one step ahead of his enemy and can calculate strategies to get out of the stickiest of situations. Although he is a trained killer and people fear him, he can be gentle, friendly and considerate of others without putting his guard down. Even when he becomes romantically involved with Iryna, he is just as much a force to be reckoned with as ever. The fact that he has a romantic side shows he can love, that he is still human on the inside, and that he is not entirely cold-hearted. I also appreciated how the character Iryna is strong and confident to the end, even after she lets her guard down and falls in love with Scorpion. Her loyalty to her country is admirable.
Scorpion Winter is the kind of story that grabs readers by the collar and does not let go until the very end. Action-packed and filled with mystery, betrayal and excitement, there is not one lull at all in Scorpion Winter. I loved this book! It just blew me away and had me furiously turning the pages to find out what happens next. The story is full of cliffhangers and surprises and the next surprise waiting around the corner is even more shocking than the last. Kaplan is a master at crafting a thriller novel which readers will find very hard to put down. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.
After a mission in Yemen goes terribly wrong, independent spy code-named Scorpion is hired to stop an assassination against a presidential candidate in Ukraine. This gets him involved with the beautiful but deadly Iryna Shevchenko, a member of the opposing party who, one, does not trust Scorpion and, two, wants to cover her team’s ass in case something goes wrong. And things do indeed go wrong, after which Scorpion and Iryna become fugitives in the Soviet Union. Hunted by every kind of alphabetical combination group under the sun, as well as the Russian mafia, Scorpion is on a race for his life to clear his name, save the woman he loves and stop a war between Russia and Ukraine that would cost the lives of millions of innocent people.
In the frozen wastes of Siberia, a silver artifact is stolen from a dead man . . . In the Middle East, the carefully planned strike on a terrorist leader goes disastrously wrong . . . Two seemingly unrelated incidents have placed the former CIA covert operative-turned-freelance spy, code-named Scorpion, in a desperate position: joining forces with a beautiful woman to prevent the assassination of a powerful Ukrainian politician.
But treachery breeds terror in the long shadow of a dangerous Russia, as Scorpion finds himself caught in a lethal trap sprung by an unknown enemy—perhaps someone on his own side of the game. And now time is ticking rapidly away with the whole world balancing on a knife's edge, just days from the opening salvos of a catastrophic war that could leave the earth itself in ruins.
