If you’re in the mood for a good, on-the-edge-of-your-seat mystery, look no further than One Murder More, an awesome novel by Kris Calvin. The author has experience working in politics and it shows in this story because her characters are involved in the political world – in Sacramento, California and not D.C. – so they all know their stuff! The political stuff in this story did bug me, because I don’t really care for politics, but it was not overdone. It is done well and shown well, but not too much to ruin the reading experience. There was also too much emphasis on what everyone was wearing but, again, it did not turn me off so much as to get me to stop reading. It just kept holding up the story a bit. But, actually, it was hard to stop reading, because I kept wanting to know what happened next!
The main character of this story, Maren Kane, is smart, funny, fashionable and independent. But most of all, she is HUMAN. Her human side is shown in her occasional carelessness and the love she has for her dog, Camper. She is not a perfect character and things do not go perfectly for her, but that’s the way it is in real life and that’s how the character is portrayed so realistically. She also struggles with comparing herself to the more stylish, flawless and sexy character, Lana Decateau (I love that name!), as well as her many attempts to find love that don’t work out so well. But Maren is a very likable character who picks herself up by her bootstraps and gets back on her horse! That’s a rather appropriate description given she wears cowboy boots and sees herself as a ropin’ and ridin’ cowgirl. In fact, the scene where she pictured herself as a cowboy nursing a gunshot wound in the leg by straddling a barstool drinking whiskey while she actually does drink whiskey in a bar while having an actual gunshot wound in her leg was kinda funny. It got downright hilarious when she got drunk and ended up planting a big fat kiss on a man she’s nursing a crush on. But despite her flaws, Maren really stood out. I imagine a lot of people could relate to her because she is written so realistically. I also really liked her English friend, Polly.
The mystery itself was also what kept me turning the pages of this book. Any of the other characters could have been the murderer, and the revelation at the end was a huge surprise. I never expected THAT! I kept trying to figure this story out but the author managed to stay one step ahead of me in the game, luring me on to devour more. It is also obvious that the author has a keen understanding of human nature; she wrote her characters so well.
One Murder More is a gripping, enticing mystery novel that was hard to put down! I loved this novel and I think it’s a good selection for anyone who enjoys reading a good mystery.
