Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy

Two Shall Become One

Sharon Lathan has continued Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with her book Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy. Unfortunately, continuing on such a classic is very hard. Most fans already have preconceived ideas of how the story would proceed and the style they like. There is just something about Jane Austen’s voice that is hard to duplicate. Any author who takes on the job of continuing the legacy has a lot of live up to.

As a huge Jane Austen fan I felt Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy lacked Austen’s sparking characterizations and biting wit. But, Sharon Lathan has a wonderful grasp of description and plot development, I just believe, she would be better served creating her own regency romance rather than trying to continue one of Jane Austen’s.

On it own merits, this story is a completely (though unrealistic) romantic look at a Victorian love story. Sharon Lathan has created a look at one of literature’s favorite couples after the story we know has ended. The book picks up with the pair’s wedding day and continues on with a never-ending honeymoon. We get to see these two strong-willed individuals come together to forge a life as one. Sadly, instead of a melding of tumultuous hearts and minds into a strong and vibrant relationship, we see a melting of independence into a co-dependent vortex of need.  Unfortunately, the characters of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy have been set on a standard by Jane Austen that few can carry on.
