The Big Chili

An Undercover Dish Mystery, #1

Cooking mysteries have become a dime a dozen so it takes a special premise to have one stand out. “The Big Chili” by Julia Buckley cooks up an outstanding take on the catering mystery series. Lilah Drake provides home cooked dishes to her clients for them to pass off as their own creations. While Lilah would love to start her own catering company, right now she’s happy to be cooking up a storm for people who are too busy to cook or just inept in the kitchen. But when somebody drops dead at a church bingo night after eating some of Lilah’s secret chili, her future cooking career is threatened. Lilah must track down the killer before her budding business is killed, or worse yet, she ends up dead herself.

This was a highly enjoyable book, especially with the constant soundtrack to Lilah’s life going on in her head. This first book, in what will hopefully be a long line of books, introduces a wide cast of interesting characters, along with a variety of tasty-sounding dishes. By the end of the book I found myself wanting to be part of Lilah’s family, and I’m eagerly looking forward to Julia Buckley’s next entry in the Undercover Dish Mystery series.
