Everybody knows the story of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, or do they? Julie Jacobs goes to Siena, Italy to discover her family's past and a missing treasure after her aunt Rose dies. Julie discovers that Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers were taken from a true love story in Siena's history, Giulietta Tolomei and Romeo Marescotti. Julie's birth name is Giulietta Tolomei and she discovers that she is descended from the original Giulietta. A curse laid down because of the original lovers seems to have touched both families through the generations. Julie quickly discovers that no one seems to be as they appear and she's not sure who she can trust. Can Julie end the curse, find the missing treasure, and discover her own Romeo before the curse takes her life as well?

"Juliet" may be Anne Fortier's first novel but it hopefully won't be her last. Through a wonderful weaving of the historical saga of Giulietta and Romeo, and Julie and Alexander's current-day struggle for love, Anne Fortier has re-created a classic into a new and passionate epic. With romance, intrigue, violence and star-crossed lovers, "Juliet" is a novel that grabs readers from the beginning and carries them on an emotional rollercoaster of a read. I have never been much of a Romeo and Juliet fan but this novel gave me a new appreciation for the story.
