Elementary, She Read

A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery, #1

“Elementary, She Read” is a great first addition in a promising new series by Vicki Delany. Gemma Doyle has moved to the Cape Cod town, West London, to run the bookstore started by her uncle. The store is located at 222 Baker Street and is a Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium. So it’s to be expected that Gemma would find herself involved in a murder mystery involving a possibly priceless piece of Sherlock memorabilia. As the main suspect, Gemma must work to solve the case while dealing with a police detective who’s an ex-former flame. The game is afoot and Gemma must stay alive long enough to solve this mystery.

I’m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so I have high standards for people writing anything related to it. This book was very well done and had me eagerly turning pages. The author also included different titles of Sherlock pastiches and other gaslight mysteries, some I was familiar with and some new ones I plan on looking up. The mystery was very well-done, the characters were interesting and the romance was light and sparkling. I really hope Gemma doesn’t try to change in future books to win the heart of the man she cares for. All in all, this is a great read for mystery fans and a must read for Sherlockians.

Book Blurb for Elementary, She Read

Gemma Doyle, a transplanted Englishwoman, has returned to the quaint town of West London on Cape Cod to manage her Great Uncle Arthur's Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium. The shop--located at 222 Baker Street--specializes in the Holmes canon and pastiche, and is also the home of Moriarty the cat. When Gemma finds a rare and potentially valuable magazine containing the first Sherlock Homes story hidden in the bookshop, she and her friend Jayne (who runs the adjoining Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room) set off to find the owner, only to stumble upon a dead body.

The highly perceptive Gemma is the police’s first suspect, so she puts her consummate powers of deduction to work to clear her name, investigating a handsome rare books expert, the dead woman's suspiciously unmoved son, and a whole family of greedy characters desperate to cash in on their inheritance. But when Gemma and Jayne accidentally place themselves at a second murder scene, it's a race to uncover the truth before the detectives lock them up for good.

Fans of Sherlock Holmes will delight in the sleuthing duo of Gemma and Jayne in Elementary, She Read, the clever and captivating series debut by nationally bestselling author Vicki Delany.
