A Silent Ocean Away: Colette's Dominion

A Silent Ocean Away: Colette’s Dominion is the first book in a planned trilogy by DeVa Gantt. It follows Charmaine Ryan as she escapes the shackles of her poverty-stricken life and creates a new one as governess to the Duvoisin family on the island of Charmantes. Past intrigues threaten to ruin her promising future. Charmaine quickly catches the eye of Paul Duvoisin, the illegitimate son of patriarch Frederic Duvoisin, but when the black sheep John returns from exile, he stokes trouble by pursuing Charmaine also. The relationship between Frederic, his second wife Colette, and his former sister-in-law Agatha Ward play an integral part of the plot as well.

This book relishes alluding to past intrigues and mysteries that leave the reader confused. There is good character development, unfortunately it seems to have happen before the story, leaving the book hard to follow and the reader questioning if they missed a previous book. While difficult at times this is a good book worth the effort to read. Hopefully, the next two in the series will answer questions that this plot line raised.
