Our December by Diane Adams is a beautifully written love story that immediately captivated me from the very first page. Ms. Adams lyrical style of writing and amazing storytelling skills quickly made me care about the two heroes in this book. As soon as I finished Our December, I had to fight the urge to not go back to the beginning and experience the story all over. I loved this book and I truly hated to see it come to an end.
Our December begins on Alex’s thirtieth birthday. Where most of us aren’t happy with getting older, Alex is very content and happy in his life. He’s got an amazing partner, Jared that he loves and trusts more than anything, and he’s feeling quite reminiscent as he waits Jared to come to him as he waits for him under their special tree. We are then taken back to the past when Alex and Jared first meet. Alex is an intelligent, determined fifteen year old boy who is just coming to terms with his sexuality. When he spots the twenty year old Jared at a construction site, Alex immediately feels an emotional connection between them. Alex confides his budding attraction to his best friend, Clarke and they decide to approach the handsome man. They successfully manage to maneuver their way over to Jared and start a conversation with him.
Even though Jared is aware that Alex is younger than him, he treats him with respect and dignity. As a friendship develops between them, the smoldering attraction they have for one another is somehow managed to be pushed to the side. Jared is convinced that Alex is too young for him, and he must grow into his own man without them giving into the love and physical attraction that they have for one another. Their relationship goes through a lot of growth and development, and the love they feel for one another is tested throughout the novel.
I loved, loved, LOVED this book! I admit I questioned how Ms. Adams was going to handle the age gap between Alex and Jared. Since Alex is still young and inexperienced with life, Jared is not only older in age than Alex, he’s also very stable and mature for a twenty year old. I really liked how Jared became a good influence on Alex, and I also liked how Alex taught Jared how to have fun again. Not once did I believe that their relationship was inappropriate in any way. I appreciated the way the feelings and the immense respect and devotion they have for one another is gradually built up. I thought the pacing of their romance was perfect, and I truly thought Alex and Jared’s relationship will stand the test of time.
Our December is the first book in the Making of a Man series. I know I will be anxiously waiting for the sequel to this book. I can’t wait to read more about this couple and the journey they must go through to develop such an amazing relationship together. This book is going on my keeper shelf where I know I’ll revisit these wonderful characters again for many years to come.

Sometimes two people fit together so well it seems their love was preordained, as if every step taken led inevitably to a happy ending. Deeply in love, Jared and Alex are such a couple, but the path to true and lasting love is rarely smooth. At 15 being gay isn't the best thing that ever happened to a guy. In fact, Alex Ross thinks it's down right scary. Then he meets 20 year old construction worker Jared Douglas, and Alex starts to think the gay thing might not be so bad after all.
The attraction between them is intense, but mindful of Alex's age Jared is determined to keep the sparks from igniting. The stress of controlling his feelings makes it almost a relief when Alex's father ships him off to prep school. Jared expects Alex to forget him and find a boy friend his own age; he doesn't anticipate how much it will hurt. When Alex comes home for Christmas, just turned 16 with his heart on his sleeve, Jared knows he can't continue to keep everything he feels a secret.
