Fire Play

Wow! I just finished reading Fire Play by Dany Sirene and I have to say, I loved every minute of it. Ms. Sirene is a new author to me, so I admit between reading the interesting blurb and seeing the beautiful cover, I was pretty anxious to read this book and I’m so glad I did! Between the fast-paced storyline, the well-written characters and the creative storytelling ability that Ms. Sirene has, I confess Fire Play has earned a spot on my keeper shelf.

At first glance I wasn’t sure what to think of Lau. He’s a fire demiurge that never really cared about anything but himself. Because of his carelessness and disregard for humans, he’s been punished by being stripped of his powers and forced to live as a human. This consequence will last for as many lifetimes as needed, until he finds another human and experiences what it’s like to love and be loved.

Even as a human child, Lau has always known what he really was. Because of this, he’s coldhearted, cruel and even psychopathic at times. He’s pushed others’ aside and never really experience love at all. He had a very hard childhood and because of this, it’s made him even bitterer and more determined that love really doesn’t exist.

When he meets Jesse Warner at a local club, there is something about Jesse’s innocence and utter sweetness that makes Lau take notice of him. At first, Lau has the intention of just stringing Jesse along…just because he can, but as time goes by his relationship with Jesse starts bringing out thoughts and feelings that Lau never thought he was capable of having. But, just as the two really start to get relaxed and even content with their relationship, Lau is stalked by someone from his past that has a definite vendetta against him.

Can I say again how much I loved this book? I really enjoyed watching the coldhearted and sometimes very unlikeable Lau slowly evolve into an almost a thoughtful, caring human…especially to Jesse. I thought the world building that was created in this book was very fresh and uniquely creative. I’ve honestly never read a book quite like this one before and I’m anxious to read more from this author again.

Both Jesse and Lau were truly a well-matched couple. I wasn’t convinced of it at first because they are so seemingly opposite and because of Lau’s shady reputation, but as their relationship progressed, I quickly rallied behind them and hoped they would get the happy ending they deserved. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fresh, gritty, creative romance with some nail biting angst and some very tender moments.
