Set in the industrial world of Steampunk (which for newcomers is a world where Britain won the revolutionary war and now everything is powered by steam. The world is covered in metallic with hand cranks and gears being used to build most all items. Women and men dress in Victorian fashion.) Gossamer Wing is the story of a widow who lost her husband 3 days after they were married. Charlotte Moncrieffe is still distraught at her husband’s passing and is seeking revenge, closure and her big start in the world of espionage. Setting up a great spy mission to recover the secret long-lost documents from the Palais Garnier , she hits a snag when her father informs her that she is not permitted to go alone. Charlotte sets up a fake marriage to get back on track. Enter Dexter who is tall, burly and an incredible dancer. As Charlotte and Dexter go through the motions of setting up and acting out their fake marriage, they begin to develop true feelings and desires.
This is my first attempt at reading into the world of Steampunk, and I am glad to say that it was a fun and fascinating journey. I was hooked from the first page as the author’s words floated off the page and created the vision of a gear enhanced world. The story of Charlotte and Dexter as they started their spy journey was never dull and their growing relationship was steam hot (forgive my bad pun). From the moment that Dexter pressed Charlotte up against the garden wall and kissed her, I was in shambles. There was an amazing chemistry between the two and their steamy story will not disappoint.
If you are new to the Steampunk world then I would recommend this book. It is a fun fast read filled with action, spy adventure and seduction.
A SPY. AN AIRSHIP. AND A BROKEN HEART.
After losing her husband to a rogue French agent, Charlotte Moncrieffe wants to make her mark in international espionage. And what could be better for recovering secret long-lost documents from the Palais Garnier than her stealth dirigible, Gossamer Wing? Her spymaster father has one condition: He won’t send her to Paris without an ironclad cover.
Dexter Hardison prefers inventing to politics, but his title as Makesmith Baron and his formidable skills make him an ideal husband-imposter for Charlotte. And the unorthodox undercover arrangement would help him in his own field of discovery.
But from Charlotte and Dexter’s marriage of convenience comes a distraction?a passion that complicates an increasingly dangerous mission. For Charlotte, however, the thought of losing Dexter also opens her heart to a thrilling new future of love and adventure.
