Violet Willougby's mother is a famous medium, though it is not as well-known that Violet's mother is an infamous fake: a false psychic and certainly not a widow. After years of helping her mother con attendees at s‚ances, they are summoned to Lord Jasper's home to demonstrate their talents. While at Lord Jasper's home, Violet is swept up into investigating the murder of Rowena Wentworth, a fractious, restless spirit who seems to have awakened Violet's ability as a medium. Soon, Violet is dodging falling statues and attempts to discredit her mother's psychic abilities. At the same time, Violet is trying to reconcile herself to becoming a genteel young lady and marrying for comfort, while dealing with her feelings for Colin, the young, Irish butler who serves in the Willoughby household.
Haunting Violet is a paranormal mystery set in the Victorian period, flush with house parties and Spiritualists, both real and fake. There are few surprises in the investigation, though the characters are well drawn and even the conniving mother is surprisingly sympathetic at the end. A good read if you are drawn to the Victorian period, ghost stories, mediums and gentle romance.
