Tarnished

Tarnished, the sequel to Perfected, is set in a world where the government passed legislation allowing humans to be genetically engineered and sold as pets. It continues Ella’s story and starts off right where Perfected left off, where Ella’s escaping from the United States to seek refuge in Canada.

Ella, the main character, really grew into herself. The events from the previous book really changed her, and made her more assertive and confident. More active and stronger. But even with that growth, she still has this naïve flair to her, where she makes these dumb decisions that have no merit. When it comes to making decisions, I don’t understand her logic sometimes.

For example, her decision to go back to the United States to be with Penn, her love interest, made no sense to me. She just escaped, and knows the consequences of going back, but still does it anyway because of love. Love. In the sense of true love, it’s a logical decision for her to make. Love makes you do crazy things, I get that, but I didn’t feel that sort of love between Penn and Ella. I don’t get that true love feeling when it comes to their relationship so her rushing back to the US for him seemed like a dumb decision.

Pacing-wise, the story has a slow start up, but picks up a few chapters in. Certain parts moved too fast—like I had to reread certain parts to fully understand, but that didn’t happen too often.

It was interesting to learn more about the “pet” industry and learn what happens to the pets that don’t get sold.

Overall, Tarnished was a good sequel for Perfected! It could have been better, but I still liked it. Hopefully, book #3 is better!
