"Death by Dumpling" is the first book in the Noodle Shop Mystery series! The story starts off with us meeting Lana Lee, a woman who works in her family’s Chinese restaurant. One day, she delivers food to the property manager Mr. Feng, who is found dead a few hours later from a bad food allergy. Everyone at her family’s restaurant knows about Mr. Feng’s allergy, so how did he end up with the bad food? The whole restaurant is under suspicion for murder, and Lana must find out the truth to save her family’s restaurant.
I LOVED this book! I’ve been reading cozies for years, and I have yet to find one that had a diverse character and her family. I’m all for the #weneeddiversebooks movement, and I was so excited to get my hands on this book.
Lana was very likable and relatable. I loved her personality and her attitude. She’s definitely someone I would be friends with in real life. Her family and all the secondary characters were all quirky and entertaining. Her family was hilarious, and I love how they interacted with each other. The way Lana’s mother always questioned her about her life goals and her love life really reminded me of my own family. It was crazy, and I loved it!
The mystery itself was very well-written and well-plotted. Excellently paced. All the clues connected to one another well and made sense. From the very beginning, it drew me in and kept my attention. The ending was superb because it totally took me by surprise, which is the best thing ever. I hate predictable mysteries where I can guess the bad guy a few chapters in, but this was nothing like it at all. Complete opposite, actually.
Overall, I loved this book and will be preordering the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It’s excellent and has no negatives whatsoever. It’s just absolutely great.
Welcome to the Ho-Lee Noodle House, where the Chinese food is to die for. . .
The last place Lana Lee thought she would ever end up is back at her family’s restaurant. But after a brutal break-up and a dramatic workplace walk-out, she figures that helping wait tables is her best option for putting her life back together. Even if that means having to put up with her mother, who is dead-set on finding her a husband.
Lana’s love life soon becomes yesterday’s news once the restaurant’s property manager, Mr. Feng, turns up dead—after a delivery of shrimp dumplings from Ho-Lee. But how could this have happened when everyone on staff knew about Mr. Feng’s severe, life-threatening shellfish allergy? Now, with the whole restaurant under suspicion for murder and the local media in a feeding frenzy—to say nothing of the gorgeous police detective who keeps turning up for take-out—it’s up to Lana to find out who is behind Feng’s killer order. . . before her own number is up.
