The beginning of Mystic Circle is cluttered with conflicted feelings, mixed signals and onerous dialogue. Detective Jack Duritz is a cop on the trail of a vicious killer and Becca Hamilton is the psychic with the instrumental visions to solving the case-predictable and formulaic in its ideal of the skeptical hero falling in love with the delicate New Age beauty. The action is slow to happen, with most of the pages occupied by sentiments of uncertainty and guilt-Becca carrying most of the uncertainty and Jack shouldering the guilt. Their passion is rooted in a brief meeting that takes place two years before the actual story begins (the prologue)-a meeting so brief yet so unbelievably (and ludicrously) profound, haunting both Becca and Jack until 50 pages later, when they finally elevate the passion to a sexy romp against the side of an SUV.
It does take a measured patience to heave through all of Becca's emotional fluctuations, but through all the weeds, Green has created a scintillating couple burning with sexual juiciness. Their encounters are raw and earthy, and Jack is absolutely adorable in his affection for Becca. Towards the later stages, the story accelerates to an exciting new level-the race for the killer leaps out and engages the reader in a suspenseful chase. The connection between Becca and Jack is sweet and touching, making their happily-ever-after all the more delightful. Mystic Circle has its rough edges, particularly with a hardened cop coupled with a sensitive psychic, but that makes for an entertaining story in which the readers (as well as the characters) have to earn the fairy-tale ending.
When Becca stood up Jack for what promised to be the hottest one-night stand of her life, she never expected to see him again. Over the years he's haunted her dreams and occasionally her psychic visions. After another vision reveals a kidnapping, she must go to the police. Instead of saving a life, she becomes the prime suspect.
Detective Jack Duritz, is investigating a series of ritualistic murders. He never expected his investigation to lead him to the woman who's starred in too many of his fantasies. Becca claims to be psychic, but he doesn't believe a word of it. Soon, however, it becomes clear that Becca is the next victim and Jack is the only person who can protect her. He must keep her close, but he finds himself keeping her far closer than any investigation would require.
