Golden Eyes is an exhilarating adventure, with the gripping moments offset by sensual encounters between Duncan Kennedy and Aliyah Carver. Duncan is wonderful, captured perfectly and solidly as the ordinary law enforcer. His language is earthy and raw, relatable on a very understandable level. Aliyah is more exotic, striking in pose as in prose. Her energy and magnetism radiates off the pages, a woman with admirable strength and temperament. Having the female lead be the shape-shifter is an interesting change, and especially well-done is the balance between the roles. Duncan is not less masculine for being a man, just as Aliyah is no less feminine for being a cheetah-woman.
But in giving so much excitement to the chase, the individual characters and their relationships are sacrificed. There is no sense of Duncan and Aliyah having connected emotionally-their credibility as a couple is lacking. Instead of hovering in the background to add to the anticipation, the poachers take over the mood and dominate the story. As such, readers mostly carry away with them the storyline of apprehending the hunters rather than the developing bond between a man and a cheetah. Had there been more dialogue between the main characters, Golden Eyes would have much more enriching and rewarding. That being said, Banks did not craft an empty investment for the readers; Golden Eyes is a genuinely enjoyable venture.
Genre: Shape-shifter Paranormal
When Sheriff Duncan Kennedy finds an injured cheetah in his mountains, he brings it home, determined to find out how she got there and stop the poachers who were hunting her. When he later checks on the cheetah and instead finds a gorgeous, naked woman with an arrow in her leg, he's completely flabbergasted.
For six months, Aliyah Carver has been trapped in cheetah form. Taken by poachers who import exotic animals to illegally hunt, she stayed in animal form to avoid detection. She escaped the hunters, but now she faces another problem -- a devastatingly sexy sheriff who now knows her secret.
