Casey Duncan is an interesting character, she willingly moved to a town that was completely off the grid and cares about the cases she works. While out hunting a local resident, Shawn Sutherland, she gets caught in a blizzard and has to seek shelter in a cave. I had no idea that A Darkness Absolute is the second book in the Casey Butler series, it does not read like it. I read this book and got swept up from the very first page. Being an outsider and the new person in a small town is tough, it’s even worse when you’re in charge of keeping the peace. Like most small towns; Rockton has its secrets, it’s a place where people go to hide. It’s up to Casey and her partner to figure out what’s going on before someone else gets hurt.
Things get a little hairy when they have to face down a bear but Casey kept her cool and even laughed about it after. Being stuck in the words during a blizzard is no joke. They were lucky they found shelter when they did. When they come face to face with a woman who has been held captive in the cave, things get real serious and it’s up to Casey to figure out how Nicole got down there and who is responsible.
Casey’s reaction to Storm was awesome and it made me smile. Her parents are something else. I like that this town looks after each other even when each person has their own secrets. It’s different though, some of the things the residents say and do make you wonder. I don’t know if I would willingly live in Rockton but it seems to work for the residents. Kelley Armstrong is a very good writer and knows how to spin a tale. I couldn’t stop reading once I started and even though it’s a thick book, it was great.
When experienced homicide detective Casey Duncan first moved to the secret town of Rockton, she expected a safe haven for people like her, people running from their past misdeeds and past lives. She knew living in Rockton meant living off-the-grid completely: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council’s approval. What she didn’t expect is that Rockton comes with its own set of secrets and dangers.
Now, in A Darkness Absolute, Casey and her fellow Rockton sheriff’s deputy Will chase a cabin-fevered resident into the woods, where they are stranded in a blizzard. Taking shelter in a cave, they discover a former resident who’s been held captive for over a year. When the bodies of two other women turn up, Casey and her colleagues must find out if it’s an outsider behind the killings or if the answer is more complicated than that...before another victim goes missing.
Casey Duncan returns in another heart-racing thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong.
