Darkest London, #5

This is the first book in the Darkest London series I have read, and I was blown away. In Evernight, Kristen Callihan masterfully weaves historical romance, a dose of steampunk, and elements of the paranormal. And yet with so much going on, with such a dark, rich world around the hero and heroine, Callihan manages to keep the focus tight on her two extraordinary main character, their compelling attraction to each other, and their necessarily complex relationship.

I loved the relationship between Holly and Will. Callihan created a scenario full of enmity and yet rife with sympathy. It was thrilling to see the hero and heroine grow and change through their connection to each other, and her clever plot meant they had to remain in each other's company throughout the novel.

More than the complex characters, the appealing dark Victorian setting, and paranormal aspects of the story, Callihan's unique voice shines through. Her writing is sharp, intelligent, and fast-paced. The story is so compulsively readable, I was halfway through the book in one sitting because I could not resist sinking thoroughly into the world she had created.

Evernight is captivating from the first line. The mystery, the romance, the paranormal and steampunk elements are all layers on a deliciously dark, rich confection that you can't help but savor. My only warning is that the story is spellbinding and once you pick up Evernight, you won't want to leave Darkest London.

Will Thorne is determined to seek revenge for what has been done to him. He holds Holly Evernight responsible, and yet when he finds her, it is clear he needs her more than he needs to destroy her. And Holly needs help too. Someone is hunting her, and Will can offer protection. When Will and Holly strike a bargain, their attraction grows, and they find far more than they ever bargained for.
