Kevin Kowalski may look like a ladies man but deep at heart he’s a family man. Part of a huge loving family, he was devastated after his divorce. Two years later, he’s dated some but is more cautious. When he meets Beth in his bar he’s more than intrigued. But she’s labeled him a player and won’t give him her full name or number. Still thinking of her, he’s thrilled when she’s part of the crew catering his brother's wedding. Another chance.
Beth was drawn to Kevin from the first, but self-preservation had her walking away. This time she can’t and she spends an awesome night in his bed. When he tells her to lock the door on her way out the next morning, her hopes of a future are dashed and she goes back to her first impression. But when she ends up pregnant, her morals tell her he has the right to know. Expecting him to be horrified and not interested, confident she can walk away with a clear conscience, she’s instead faced with a thrilled man with an equally thrilled family who take her in and try to make her feel at home. An only child of loving but stifling parents, Beth has taken self-sufficiency to new heights and struggles with her new situation. Presented with everything he’s ever wanted, Kevin goes for Beth and his baby with guns blazing. But Beth has built a self-protective fortress over the years. Will he be able to breach it?
This was a lighthearted at times, emotional at others read. Two people couldn’t have had more opposite upbringings. This in turn caused major issues for Beth, but determination was the result for Kevin. As he slowly learned how Beth interpreted his actions as intrusive, he got creative but not sneaky. It was heartwarming to see him trying so hard, but also frustrated me, as he seemed to be the only one working towards a compromise. Beth made her decision and seemed unwilling to deviate, thus putting Kevin through a lot of emotional turmoil. I never did get the impression that Beth was falling in love, until she admitted it to herself. She was that unbending.
Kevin I would take home in heartbeat, and felt he suffered a little more than was necessary in his quest for Beth. The integration of his family and their wide variety of suggestions and opinions were realistic and often amusing. Not a flaming story of passion, this was a slow build to a lasting and loving relationship that was a result of a failed condom and a major misunderstanding the morning after. Would these two have ended up if she hadn’t become pregnant? Probably not, but it was love that was going to keep them together. Beth and Kevin just had to come to that conclusion themselves, and we the lucky readers got to go along for the ride.
