On the surface, Katie has led a charmed life. But in reality it's just been boring and disappointing. Then on New Year's Eve all that changes with a car accident, and Marcos. Marcos is bad news - gang member, prison time, but he also has a spark that just won't die no matter how bad things get. And things are pretty bad when he hits Katie's car in a snowstorm. These two have nothing in common and yet they connect on a level most people can only dream about. And they do nothing about it for months.
I loved this story, and not because it was a fast light read. It was a long dark read, with death and despair, abuse and acrimony. And a blossoming love. There are realities out in the world that a country gal like me will never see or understand. Gang life is one of those. I'm more of a Katie myself. Maybe that is why both Katie and I found Marcos so irresistible. It's not just his sexy body and barely-there accent. It's his attitude towards women, his protective stance with those he loves and the fact that although he is technically a criminal, his word is his bond. The book wasn't all doom and gloom and had some comedic relief as well. I would recommend this book without hesitation, and strongly suggest that the Battered Hearts series be read beforehand for clarity with other characters and story lines in the book.
Marcos Rivera is a fighter. A gang member. Someone who has seen the dark side of humankind and survived. He has lost family and gained enemies. He has stolen cars and destroyed hearts, stripping one for money and the other for pleasure. His past is haunted and his future is bleak.
Katie Foster is a high school history teacher. Smart, strong, and sexy. She is a woman Marcos shouldn’t want. Shouldn’t touch. Shouldn’t love. He met her in Garnet, a backwards, hick town that’s the last place in the world he wants to be, but he finds himself going back, all for a taste of the forbidden.
Katie represents all that is good in the world, and Marcos knows he’s nothing but trouble for her perfect life. He fights and he screws. He commits crimes and he breaks the rules. He will never change and he will never escape his gang lifestyle.
