Jason makes a less than spectacular impression on Alyssa on their first meeting, and she doesn’t care for him a bit. He’s handsome and all, but really! The arrogance! Jason, to the contrary, is struck by Alyssa’s individuality and can’t seem to get her out of his head. While he is drawn and fascinated by her, she is indifferent to him. That leads him to conceal his presence while pursuing a romantic interlude in the garden. And he is hooked. Alyssa is enamored of her mysterious pursuer, but would she be if she knew he was Jason?
I know rakes are irresistible to virgins and all, and with good reason. Alyssa is more alive than your average miss, but also much more innocent. But that doesn’t last when she meets “Jamie”. To Alyssa, what they do together following her rescue is a prelude to a relationship, but to “Jamie” it’s just another day at the office. When she calls a halt once his true feelings are revealed, she becomes an obsession. Or is she more than that?
So begins a tangled web of deceit on Jason/Jamie’s part, and disillusionment and heartache on Alyssa’s. The best friends of the hero and heroine factor in to the story quite a bit, and have an ongoing dalliance with romance themselves. Ms. Stone has written another delightful tale that hits me right in my literary happy spot. Not to be missed.
