Mikaela thinks it odd that she has to be in a committed relationship to travel to a clients home but figures it's no ones business but her own that she's no longer engaged. The embarrassment of being cheated on is too fresh and she's not ready to share. So what? That has nothing to do with her ability as a professional so she travels to do her job, never knowing what she was about to encounter.
Josh and his brothers live a secluded existence with their widowed father. They are shifters and as such are driven by their animal side at times. If they encounter an "available" female their instincts take over to claim her and it could get bloody. For them and for her if she resists. And what woman wouldn't freak?
When Mikaela arrives Josh's instincts clamor but she's off limits and that keeps him, and his siblings, human and in control. That doesn't stop he and Mikaela from falling quickly into a physical relationship that confuses things. And when Mikaela's status is accidentally revealed at the dinner table things degrade quickly.
I really enjoyed this quick read. It leaves the door wide open for more stories for Josh's brothers, too. I did question why Josh was so okay with Mikaela "cheating" on her fianc‚. That should have raised a few flags for him in my opinion, but that's just me. I understand their overwhelming desire clouding the issue but once the hormones faded that would have been high on my list of questions. The instant change in Josh and his brothers when Mikaela was revealed to be unattached was something else and vividly illustrated their basic differences from humans.
I really felt for Josh as he experienced the pain and depression of not being able to claim Mikaela and the strength of character it took to restrain himself. She had no idea what she was playing with and perhaps got more than she anticipated. What started as a sexual liaison turned into something more for both and that made a good read. I just wish Mikaela had told Josh in private about her status, but that would have made one of the best scenes in the book unnecessary.
When Mikaela Patterson takes on a client with specific requirements that no single women be allowed on his property, she keeps her broken engagement a secret. She doesn’t realize her client and his sons are mountain lion shifters whose instinct to mate with any available woman can turn deadly.
Josh Woods knows his father would never allow an available woman on the property, so he doesn’t understand why he is immediately drawn to Mikaela. Their passion ignites, but when the truth comes out about Mikaela’s true availability and Josh’s animal instincts, their desire has consequences neither wants to face.
Warning: This book contains a shifter who will make you sweat and a feisty heroine who can take him on. Get a cool drink when you read this one!
