Nina is just doing her job when she’s abducted by the “man” in her dreams. She has yet to see his face. At this pivotal moment her life changes forever and it’s how she handles it and herself that determines her future. Aware she has a healing touch, she’s drawn to her captor Reddix with an overwhelming urge to fix him but he scares her. She stays true to herself though and confounds Reddix with her continued concern. Not what he’s used to.
Reddix is slowly losing it. Faced with leading his people with his disability of feeling everyone’s emotions as physical sensations he desperately seeks a solution from a known witch. Her “cure” leads him to his dream companion Nina, who he must deliver to the witch to complete the cure. As he and Nina travel the bumpy road back to Tarsia, his home planet, they fall in love. As Reddix realizes Nina herself is his cure it may be too late.
This is not a quick read or a simple one. The seven preceding books are recommended for continuity. I thought Saber was tortured but Reddix leaves him in the dust. This was an emotional story focusing on Reddix and his problem. As the story progresses we learn more about Lissa and Saber’s fate as rulers on Tarsia, Kat’s wedding, and meet the next heroine as well as a hint of the next “hero,” though I hesitate to call him that.
The whole book is a slow build up to the consummation of Reddix and Nina’s physical relationship. While they have sexual contact they don’t fully connect until the very (and I mean very) end. As always, this author penned an enjoyable story that continued my fascination with all things Kindred.
Nina is normal Florida girl with a job and a life and a grandmother she adores. But lately she’s been having disturbing dreams. Dreams of a man with a shadowed face—a man filled with pain and need and desire only she can slake. She fears him but at the same time, the dreams leave her breathless with need. Who is this dark stranger and what does he want of her?
Reddix is a Touch Kindred with an inverted Touch Sense—he can’t touch with his mind like others of his kind. Instead, he is doomed to endure their emotions like a physical invasion every time he’s around anyone. Desperation drives him to kidnap Nina—the girl he has been dreaming of. But he doesn’t take her out of love but as a sacrifice to one who claims she can cure his affliction.
Snatching Nina from her job, Reddix takes her on a journey to the stars that ends in disaster. Now, marooned on a strange planet they will have to learn to work together in order to survive. Can Nina forgive Reddix’s attack and gain his trust enough to heal him…or will his fate remain forever Shadowed?
