I must say I liked this second book even more than the first in the series. Severus is Drusus’ security and best friend. He’s more often than not where his prince is and since his prince has met his mate, the best friend of said mate is there as well. So begins the collision of Severus and Cassie, and it ain’t pretty. They argue, they sneer and they endure one another’s company until it’s no longer endurance but anticipation and then lust. Severus is like Drusus in his possessive alpha persona but has an air of restraint that Drusus lacked, and that is due to the fact he refuses to wear his mating necklace.
This story picked up at the end of the first and kept the background crisis between the Insedi and Protonecis moving along. I really liked the effort the author put into building the Insedi culture and weaving their plight into why the men are on earth seeking mates. The additional story line of Cassie and what is going on in her office provided the catalyst to throw Severus and Cassie together often and get to really know one another, and the attraction that followed. There was a lot going on but I never got lost or confused as the author wove her magic and kept me intrigued to the end, anticipating more.
While the sex is steamy it’s not in your face and Severus and Cassie don’t actually “do” the deed until well into the book. I liked that Severus fell under Cassie’s spell without the affirmation of the necklace and perhaps that is what made this book appeal to me more than the first. I anxiously await more about the Insedi and their quest to rebuild their species.
Thrown together by the mating of Drusus and Avelina, Severus Faal and Cassie Wells find themselves drawn into a world of corporate espionage when Cassie catches a co-worker planting monitoring devices at her law office. Cassie's drive to uncover the reason for the infiltration immediately engages Severus's protective instincts to keep her safe. As they work together to solve this mystery, they begin a journey of self-discovery that raises old ghosts and salts unhealed wounds. Since Severus refuses to wear his mating necklace, as is the custom of the Insedi male, he relies on instinct and readily dismisses signs that Cassie has triggered his mating cycle. While Cassie has a fearless outer shell, her core is full of shadows and indecision. A troubled childhood stagnates her ability to open her heart and experience a love that could span a millennium. Book 2 in the Fueled By Lust series delivers heart-wrenching romance, intrigue, hot alpha-males, passion, and scorching, knee-wobbling sex. (Light Spanking, HEA)
