A heroine afflicted with low self-esteem. A Hero with an "I'm cursed" complex. A mystery that is a decade old surrounding the heroine's mother.
Aimee Daventry is the youngest of three daughters of the infamous Marchioness of Albright, a stage actress who married a titled aristocrat and was murdered. This is the third book in the Daventry sisters' series, and the last. While reading the first two would have been helpful, not too much reference was made to what transpired to bring the solving of the mystery to it's current point.
Aimee was plagued with a loss of memory after having the misfortune of witnessing the murder of her mother. Ten years later, she is once again plagued with dreams of that evening, and clues are slowly revealed to her as to what really happened.
A family friend, Viscount Royce Grenville, who Aimee had a tendre' for, and was rebuffed by, is back in her life after a years absence. Aimee has decided she will never marry, that there is something inherently unlovable about her, much to her happily married sisters dismay. Royce feels he is cursed, as everyone he has ever loved has died. The curse was put in his head by his own father, after his brother, the heir, was killed as a result of an accident their father holds Royce responsible for.
Aimee and Royce have a confrontation in the gardens, where Aimee reveals her dreams have started again, revealing clues to the mystery. Has someone overheard her revelation of a mystery thought solved? It would appear so as someone makes an attempt on Aimee's life.
The story progresses nicely, with the usual requisite disturbances and catastrophes that force the pair to face their problems and insecurities, and their love for one another. This book took me three days to read, when my norm is much quicker. It wasn't a bad book; it just didn't get its claws in me and force me to read it to its conclusion. While my interest is piqued for the first two books in the series, I am not inclined to run right out and buy them.
What woman could resist such a passionate protector as Royce Grenville, Viscount Stonehurst? Certainly not I, Lady Aimee Daventry. The last time I saw Royce I was just a girl. I was drawn to him even then, though he returned from war with dark secrets of his own.
