The world as we know it ended 10 years ago, releasing vampires and werewolves on the ones who survived. Among other things. And Andy is one of those other things. She travels the post-apocalyptic highways, reaping those dead or near dying and sending them to the afterlife. When she comes upon Sanctuary, yet another town that's turned itself into a fortress, she encounters someone she can't identify at all. Mason. He appears human, but he's more. What is he going to become, and will she have to kill it?
Mason is an ex-soldier doing what he was trained to do. Protect those unable to. His rule is if you are not human, you are not welcome in Sanctuary overnight. When he makes Andy, an indefineable woman who saved him and his hunters from certain death from a pack of lycans, leave Sanctuary his guilt makes him go after her into the dark. After a night of passion he's convinced she's the one for him. But how can he break his own rules at Sanctuary?
The virus that heralded the end of civilization made latent genes dominant and the birth of ghouls, vampires and lycans began. Andy's latency was that of a reaper, as in the Grim Reaper. Talk about a mood killer. While she knows what she is she doesn't embrace it fully and her ambiguity makes her a cipher that Mason can't resist. Little does he know he has secrets of his own that Andy will help uncover.
While the story was hugely intriguing and kept me glued to the pages, the sex was blatantly missing and what there was was very abbreviated. That was disappointing since Mason had me from the start, and Andy's snarkiness promised more. For a very entertaining read that will engage your love of the spooky this is a recommended read. If you are looking for a hot interlude as a distraction, this isn't it.
The World after the End of the World will never be the same again…
Sanctuary. Clichéd name, but the sentiment is still the same. Ten years after the end of the world, ex-soldier Mason and a small group of humans defend their fortified town against creatures of myth and legend made real. But with dwindling game to hunt and a lycan pack in the area looking for an easy meal, just surviving is getting harder every day.
Andy has a few screws loose, and she knows it. She’s been on the road since the bombs fell and changed humanity forever. Driven by inhuman instincts, she tracks the newly and soon-to-be dead and dispatches their souls to the afterlife. Sometimes they go quietly, most put up a fight. She doesn’t care either way. Her ambition in life is to find her next hit of coffee and one day, maybe, sleep in a real bed again.
Then Andy’s instincts bring her to Sanctuary and its enigmatic leader, Mason, and even the world after the end of the world will never be the same again…
Warning: Contains a snarky female Reaper with a hair-trigger temper and a caffeine addiction, a hot ex-commando with an attitude and a twisted sense of humour and a happily ever after that defies death itself.
