Forced into marrying a man much older than herself, Olivia has endured her husbands monthly attentions. No love between them makes for a cold marriage, and to fulfill her carnal cravings Olivia fantasizes about the man she really wants, Tristan Knightley. Out of her reach she fashions her musings on the snippets she hears from society ladies who have had the great fortune of being in his bed. And there are many. But a woman must dream or she will wither and so she comforts herself with that small pleasure.
Tristan knew Olivia was the one for him when he first saw her three years ago. A confirmed rake, he needed to educate himself on how to court a proper woman, but once he was ready to pursue her she was already engaged to the Earl of March. Filling the void in his heart with meaningless sex would have to suffice but to his dismay he finds it does not. To save his sanity he plans to seduce her to remove her forever from his thoughts, only to do the opposite. Now what can he do but wait?
The marriage mart of Victorian society made for many miserable people. Paired for wealth and political standing it was more like animal husbandry. Olivia and Tristan are two people who are meant for one another but they must traverse the maze of propriety to get to one another, and then they must make some risky choices. While some might frown on Olivia’s behavior while married understand the marriage was on paper only; she and her husband had no feelings for one another. And the heart wants what the heart wants, selfish as it may seem.
Very sexy and eye-popping, the ball they attend to explore their physical attraction illustrates just how much release is needed in the strict society. At times desperate their love affair pulls the heartstrings and makes the reader hope for them to be together. A good read.
