Oh, I so enjoyed my reunion with Kaylee and Talree. Kaylee is expecting and has the wonderful personality that goes with it. She's cranky, tired and so ready for this to be over with. Stress should be avoided late in pregnancy, but apparently Kaylee's usual penchant for attracting trouble didn't get the memo.
The vendetta between the Coletti and the Shani Queen, as well as some unknown traitors, gets pretty heated and Kaylee is in the middle of it. Of course. The usual sense of humor was used as in previous books, which I personally totally enjoy. Some rehashing of the previous books were relayed via memories shared between Kaylee and Soulet. This has caused some dissension from other reviewers but while a bit detailed, I appreciated the reminders. And the first few books are out of print and unavailable, so definitely needed for those who missed out on "Just My Luck" and the "Warlord's Comeuppance."
Talree shows his utter devotion for Kaylee, and vice versa, and the addition to their family is just as dangerous as they are, or will be. The aspect of a "talking" baby was a little weird, but it did add something to the story. There is a budding relationship between Kaylee's Uncle Hank and Soulet that promises to be interesting if it is continued; I certainly have a lot of interest. You think your family is dysfunctional? Read this and you'll feel downright normal. The interaction between Kaylee and her father-in-law is always entertaining, as well as the loyalty and support she gains from everyone she meets, be they human or otherwise. Wonderful world building that is consistent throughout the series, as well as feminine power displayed in an entertaining manner but also with traits that any woman can identify with. While not as heavy in the romance department as previous books, still a keeper.
Kaylee knew being a Coletti Warlord's mate wasn't going to be easy. Not only was Talree downright scary, he had a bossy streak a mile long and collected enemies like most men collected lovers. But while Kaylee's life might not be perfect, Talree truly loved her.
Flash forward nine months to a very pregnant, insanely hormonal and cranky as hell Kaylee. If the pregnancy wasn't enough to drive her crazy, Talree's enemies were tap dancing on her last nerve. The Shani Queen Mother, a psychotic alien with a bone to grind against Talree, decided she wanted the planet Tartum - a barren piece of crap loaded with Ditrum crystals, and part of the Coletti Empire. Her master plan? Kidnap Kaylee and hold her for ransom. If the Overlord refused to give the Queen Mother Tartum, she would feed Kaylee and her son to the Tai-Kok.
She thinks Kaylee will beg for mercy. Boy, is the alien bitch in for a surprise. She's about to meet a woman suffering from hormone overload and a serious lack of chocolate. The only one begging for mercy will be the Queen Mother.
