Ellie is an office worker/nurse at Mercile Pharmaceuticals. She's shocked when she's approached by the authorities to spy on her employer as they are suspected of performing heinous experiments and going so far as creating a new species to test on. When she finds out they are right she becomes determined to free them all. It takes months to get in a position where she can get real evidence and during that time she becomes drawn to subject 416. She'll do absolutely anything to save him regardless of the consequences. Even if he never forgives her.
Fury has been treated as a commodity his entire life. Never loved or held, always chained and abused. The cautious nurse Ellie is the only one he's ever trusted even though they've never spoken. She has an air about her that draws him. But when he is at his absolute lowest she betrays him in the worst way conceivable and he vows his revenge.
Months later Mercile has been exposed, the subjects released and deemed New Species and given sovereignty and rights. When 416, now Fury, sees Ellie he totally loses it and has her flat on her back, his teeth at her throat ready to end her. But he can't. And so it begins.
Fury and Ellie are meant to be together but their basic biology as well as their life experiences get in the way constantly. Dubbed a "communication breakdown" is putting it mildly. But what is never in doubt is their devotion to one another after they get past what happened in the beginning of their relationship and Fury decides to not kill Ellie.
While Fury is a little spooky sometimes with his self-proclaimed obsession with Ellie it's also kind of erotic the way he is totally focused on her. Their sex life is fun and spicy as well as frequently interrupted, but it takes quite a bit into the book to get there. And it's not all puppies and roses either. Sometimes it is harsh and disturbing and just plain painful to read.
Ellie is a phoenix who has rebuilt her life after it went down in flames the first time. With an ex, psychotic parents and a destroyed career she's lost weight and has built herself up and is determined to help these unfortunate people. Whether they want it or not. She is a kickass heroine who doesn't whimper and cry in the corner. She marches straight into the fray and doesn't let anyone, especially Fury, tell her what to do. This series promises so much and I look forward to the next installments.
