New Species, #12

Book 12 in the series that must be read in order. We've met Darkness before and now it's his turn to suffer. Darkness is just that, devoid of a light side. He appears cold and unfeeling and lacking in compassion. But he's actually the opposite, and the facade is one he hides behind. As all Species, Darkness has suffered but he's also been forced to confront his own demons due to actions perpetuated while he was incarcerated by Mercile. And it's not pretty. Now he finds himself inexplicably and inescapably drawn to Kat and he fumbles and falters as he tries to figure out what to do with .... her.

Kat is in a moral pickle. As an agent in the FBI she has to follow order, but her boss is an ass and she thinks he's operating out of the FBI's parameters. What to do? Playing a character while in homeland proves problematic when she has to make judgement calls that put her in the cross hairs of Darkness. These two are attracted and I personally liked that they just dove into a physical relationship. Sometimes it feels wrong but these two clicked for me. But the bad news is it makes for some difficulties as the story unfolds, adding layers to deception. The background story was as always thought provoking, and I like how the author keeps finding percussion waves of Mercile's actions and how it continues to bring couples who would otherwise never meet together. This is a great addition to the series that just whets the appetite for more.

Book Blurb for Darkness

Kat’s boss wants dirt on the NSO. She is sent to Homeland undercover but everything goes wrong as soon as she enters the front gates. She is arrested by a big, powerful, sexy New Species but she is not frightened. He turns her on and things heat up fast between them. Now, she just hopes he doesn’t break her heart.

Darkness admires Kat’s courage but he cannot trust anything she says. He hasn’t been with a female for years because he knows he is too damaged. He is not mate material, despite his desire to possess her in every way. Darkness fears losing control—the one thing that defines his life. He doesn’t think he can tear down the protective walls he’s built, even for her.

Inside Scoop: Kat never realized how much fun handcuffs and dominant males could be until she discovered her kinky side through Darkness’ need for control.
