Crystal Cove

Friday Harbor, #4

Justine goes through the motions every day but something vital is missing. She loves her friends, her life, her job. What she can’t love is a man. She’s had relationships and boyfriends but never feels what it seems her friends have no trouble feeling. She’s getting older, and frankly desperate, and is determined to change her romantic life. When she finds out that her selfish, narcissistic mother cast a spell to “protect” her from heartbreak, she finally has something to focus on. And so begins her odyssey deeper into magic than she’s ever been, and what she finds along the way, as well as who, changes her forever.

Jason Black is rich and has a problem of the spiritual kind. When he targets a cure for his ailment nothing stops him, except that which he never anticipated. Justine is between him and what he thought was his greatest desire. Justine herself soon becomes his greatest desire. He has a black cloud hanging over his life; can he and Justine find the sunshine?

This is the most recent in the Friday Harbor books. It’s called book 3, but to me it’s book 4. Or maybe book 3.5. No gnawing desire, no heartfelt angst; what a bummer. The story line was creative and kept me reading, and Justine’s mother was a piece of work to be savored. With a few steamy scenes between Justine and Jason we were just supposed to buy into their never ending love. It was probably my least favorite of the series and for a very simple reason; I didn’t feel any chemistry at all between Justine and Jason.

Book Blurb for Crystal Cove

From bestselling author Lisa Kleypas comes the third book in her Friday Harbor series, Crystal Cove.

When Justine Hoffman was born her mother cast a spell to protect her from heartbreak, and as a result,  she is incapable of falling in love. Eventually Justine's irrepressible curiosity —and her wish to lead a normal life —get the better of her,  and she finds a way to temporarily block the enchantment. However, when Justine meets the mysterious Jason Black, she accidentally unleashes a storm of desire and danger that will threaten everything she holds dear . . . and together Justine and Jason discover that love is the most powerful magic of all.
