Brawn is the easy going type among New Species. Sociable, he gets along with everyone and enjoys his work with the council. When circumstances require a Species to join the retrieval team he volunteers for the job, knowing he will have to live outside the walls of New Species land. When he meets his housemate Becca, he begins to wonder at his vow to never touch a human female. Becca calls to him but he resists.
Becca is a widow recovering from a bad marriage. She made it look good to placate her father and hide her shame but she has some issues with facades. When she meets Brawn she’s instantly attracted but respects his comments about frail females of the human variety. When she and Brawn finds themselves kidnapped and locked in the same cage, they grow closer under the stress of being forced to undergo breeding experiments at the hands of former Mercile employees. Convinced her father and his retrieval team will find them she and Brawn vow to be a team and survive together. They’ll do anything to hold out until that help. Anything.
Just when I think the author can’t make these books more interesting she manages to do just that. I’m always convinced I’ll never find another book in the series as good as the last and I’m always proved wrong.
Brawn and Becca’s story was very emotional and while their attraction is instant and explosive, they don’t get to the “good stuff” until well in the book. I liked the slow build up of passion and regard that led to the heated exchange they could no longer deny. As usual, simple communication and hesitance to expose their weaknesses led to confusion and misinterpretation of intent that led to the couple being separated. Which of course is what frustrated me while keeping the story moving and interesting. While I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of reading about the males and their weakness for us frail humans, I would love a story featuring Breeze, a Species female. She plays a part in every book and I want to learn more about her. If you’ve started the series don’t stop now; and if you haven’t start at the beginning immediately. Not to be missed.
One look at Brawn, and Becca is wondering how he’d look without his clothes. He’s also instantly attracted to her, but has sworn never to touch a human female. They just aren’t sturdy enough for the type of rough sex Brawn enjoys most. When he learns he’ll be living under the same roof with Becca, Brawn simply sees it as a chance to broaden his knowledge of humans. Hopefully he can do so while keeping his hands off her…
His good intentions go astray when they’re both kidnapped and locked together in a cage. Brawn finds himself reliving a nightmare when he’s once again subjected to breeding experiments at the hands of New Species’ enemies—who will use Becca to get what they want. Brawn and Becca will have to depend on each other if they hope to survive.
