In a case of mistaken identity Kansas Smith is left for dead in the Florida everglades. By sheer luck and chance she is discovered and rescued by Barret Atkins, a police detective, who is recovering from his own near death experience. He still carries the physical and mental scars with him.
Barret’s life has gone through an almost transformation and he is still recovering from the ordeal. In Kansas, he sees a kindred spirit. But as their love begins to bloom Barret backs away allowing for the sneaky entrance of Duncan Craig, Barret’s former friend turned vicious rival to strike up a friendship with Kansas. A situation that is all too familiar to Barret.
The Heart of the Hunter is Natalie-Nicole Bates first romantic suspense, and she does not disappoint. It is also her longest book to date, and I applaud the longer read. If you have read Natalie-Nicole Bates before, you know her contemporaries are set in the quintessential town of Unity. While The Heart of the Hunter is not, it still has a very acute connection between Kansas Smith and the heroine from Back to You, Lynsey Reznor. The connection is well hidden, but if you have read both books, you may just spot it.
Emotionally driven, The Heart of the Hunter will have you rooting for Kansas and Barret. It’s heart breaking, shocking in places, and inspiring as well. Well-developed characters and a deep plot await you. Natalie-Nicole Bates has a style that is all her own. A definite must-read.
After a devastating accident, Barret Atkins has accepted a quiet, solitary existence. His life is turned upside down, when he finds the badly injured Kansas Smith, left for dead in a case of mistaken identity. As Kansas begins to recover, Barret must face some deep scars of his own. When the couple begin to fall for each other, their lives spin into a revival of past hurts, jealousies, and betrayals, causing Barret to put a halt to their budding relationship.
Barret’s hesitation causes his best friend-turned vicious rival, Duncan Craig, to pursue a friendship with Kansas. Where will this leave Barret? Can they all hold on long enough to escape Kansas’s attacker, and will they ever conquer their own inner demons intent on keeping them apart?
