Rory Lane is leading a very happy life in London when she receives the sudden news her mother has passed away and she must return home to Mount Pleasant. She hasn’t lived in Mount Pleasant for over fifteen years, and has no fond memories of the place. When she arrives home, things go from bad to worse. Her sister, Laurel, is angry with her for leaving her alone for so many years with their alcoholic mother. Laurel tells Rory that everything concerning their mother and the closing up of her affairs falls on to Rory to sort out. Laurel then drops another bombshell: Their family home is being sold to the town council, and the surrounding cemetery is being relocated. The same cemetery where Rory’s baby sister is buried.
The news keeps getting worse. Before her mother’s death, she agreed to board one of the members of the excavation team. But CJ Rausch is unlike any other man Rory’s ever met. He’s strong and handsome, but also very untrusting and a touch mysterious. As they spend time together, Rory and CJ realize they have a lot in common, but the huge walls of protection CJ has erected around himself may doom their relationship.
An unthinkable incident happens involving Laurel, and everyone’s life spins out of control. A cop and wannabe suitor to Rory steps up to be the hero, but he has his own dirty little secrets. Finally, when things look their bleakest, CJ presents Rory with a solution that might just solve her problems, but there is a huge string attached.
One Winter is the most bizarrely fascinating books I’ve read this year, and I mean that in a great way. It’s a combination of a romance, a mystery, and a suspense novel all in one. It features a cast of eclectic characters who all harbor different secrets and agendas. Rory Lane is a perfect heroine, strong but with just a touch of vulnerability. CJ Rausch is a multi-faceted hero who at times borders on a paranormal character. The plot and setting is rich and unique. This is the kind of story that only comes along once every few years. I highly recommend One Winter.
After her mother’s sudden death, Rory Lane is home again. It has been fifteen years since she escaped Mount Pleasant and everyone and everything in it. Now she must oversee the closing of her mother’s affairs.
The only bright spot is Rory’s blossoming friendship with boarder CJ Rausch. Rory senses that CJ just might be her soul mate, but the handsome excavator is somewhat of a standoffish loner.
After an unthinkable event, Rory’s life spins out of control, and she must deal not only with her grasping, selfish sister, but also a manipulative, wannabe suitor. CJ offers Rory a way out, but at what price? Beware: Everyone has secrets in Mount Pleasant...And they enjoy them!
