This book is one in a series. Though there's a lot of back story the author gives us plenty of info to get the reader up to speed, without having read the previous novels. Alexa is a werewolf and more. Having been psychic before she became a werewolf, she is even more revved up and powerful since having become bonded by Arys a vampire she not only trusts but loves. There are a lot of vamps who want a taste of Alexa, as they are naturally drawn to power. It is a major concern to Alexa's that she doesn't allow hersef to be put in a position of vulnerability. The story and vampire politics reminded me strongly of Keri Arthur's Riley Jensen novels.
Alexa is a novelty, a werewolf with vampire powers. Since there has never been someone like her before, she needs answers to her dilemma of how to control her powers. Arys' sire, Harley, claims to have all the answers she seeks, but making a deal with him will come with a price. A very dangerous vampire, any deal she makes with him would be like making a deal with the devil.
Arys practically orders her not to go anywhere near Harley. Despite the fact that he warns her aware from Harley out of concern for her safety, as soon his back is turned, she allows her frustration and fear about her out of control powers, to lead her right back to Harley.
I did feel that often Alexa's disregard for her own safety meant that she behaved like a teenager. Alexa has to deal with threats to her pack from a rogue gang who have a grudge with the daughter of the former pack alpha. As always her mates, vampire Arys and werewolf Shaz, can be counted on to support her. That said, in this novel it's Shaz who keeps saving the day for Alexa. This novel was enjoyable and action packed.
Alexa O'Brien has more power than she can handle. A werewolf bound to a vampire by a force bigger than the both of them, Alexa is feeling lost. Desperation drives Alexa to make a deal with the one person who can guide her, a man she loathes, Harley Kayson. He just so happens to be the sire of her vampire lover, Arys Knight. To say Arys is pissed about this would be putting it lightly.
Conflict threatens to destroy what Alexa and Arys share. Due to their eternal bond, they can never truly walk free of each other. When Arys teams up with his sire to revisit their sordid past, the pain he and Alexa inflict on one another rises to a scathing boil. Alexa comes to realize that her only solution is to fulfill Arys' greatest wish and worst nightmare, regardless of the consequences. Full length novel: 95,000 words / Heat 4 Flames
