This book has it all – great characters, intrigues, backstabbing, affairs and more twists than the sixties, and through it all one silken thread of love binding them together. Erica and Brian met fell in love and got engaged to marry within weeks. They knew that the love and passion they share is the kind that lasts forever. Erica was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, to a very wealthy and influencial family. Erica parents are both from families which founded the town of Hattersville, Ohio.
Erica finds she has a constant battle with her mother who expected her to marry into another prominent Hattersville family. Since childhood, Erica and Griffin had been constantly thrown together by their matchmaking mothers. Because they had practically grown up together, the two were more brother and sister than anything else. Both Erica and Griffin’s mothers ignored the fact that they were only ever going to be friends and tried to pressure them into an arranged marriage.
Now Erica and Brian are engaged to be married. While Erica and Brian are aware that Karen is far from happy about their forthcoming marriage, they have no idea of the lengths she will go to, to keep them apart.
Erica’s best friend, April is a top model who was born on the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ in Hattersville. Her grandmother was a housekeeper in one of the many impressive houses in the grander side of town. Karen hates her and has always been outraged by the fact that her daughter would want to befriend someone she considers is beneath them. April has been in love with Griffin for years, but she can already claim Karen as an enemy and knows that with three divorces behind her she is the wrong person for Griffin, who is considering running for Mayor.
If ‘A Silken Thread’ was a soap opera, any actress would kill to play the part of Karen Sanders, she’s a cold blooded, calculating snob. She froze her own husband out of their marital bed. Hides the fact that one of her relatives didn’t die in a car accident twenty years previously, and is keeping secrets that she’ll do anything to keep hidden. She hires a private detective to dig up dirt on Brian, her daughter’s fiancé; with the unspoken proviso that if there are no dirt that she expects the investigator to invent some.
Wilson, Erica’s father finds that being around his daughter and soon to be son in law reminds him of what he has been missing. He has been trapped in a loveless marriage for thirty years. Brian’s attractive, vibrant mother Rita, is making him feel things he thought he was too old to feel. Wilson is thinking that its time he stopped living a half-life and time to make a life for himself. Especially now that his daughter is refusing to conform to the life her mother wants her to live. Without Erica around as a buffer he sees how lonely and stifling his life is. At Erica and Brian’s engagement party, Karen is mocking Rita’s outfit because in her eyes, Rita’s clothing was clearly not designer label or tasteful enough.
Karen doesn’t find any dirt on Brian. But what the investigator reveals is the perfect tool to end her daughter’s engagement. This devious and spiteful woman is just one of many characters that draw you into Ms Jackson’s always wonderful writing. I know that several of her novels have been made into films, and I think this one would make a great mini series. I was constantly thinking, ‘Wow what happens next?’ while reading it. You never have to regret buying one of Ms Jackson’s novels, and you will be royally entertained.
For Erica Sanders, finding a soul mate was the easy part. Brian Lawson is the man she wants, and everyone agrees they’re the ideal couple. Almost everyone. The one exception is Erica’s mother, Karen, who prefers her daughter marry another man. Karen even hires a private detective to investigate Brian, but the truth he uncovers is the last thing she expected—a devastating betrayal that rips both families apart.
Convinced that her relationship can’t be salvaged, Erica ends her engagement. Yet she has lingering doubts over her decision, especially once Brian’s attractive single neighbor starts pursuing him. A chance meeting proves that the passion between Brian and Erica hasn’t dimmed—but neither has the determination of others to keep them apart, or the shocking lengths Karen will go to in order to undermine her daughter’s relationship.
As secrets old and new are revealed, Erica and Brian find themselves caught between the bonds of the past and an uncertain future, each making painful discoveries about who to believe and trust. Masterfully told and laced with the sensuality and drama that Brenda Jackson does best, this is an unforgettable story of relationships at their most complex, and how hard it can be to choose between living separate lives—or holding fast when love hangs by a silken thread…
