In “Second Time Sweeter” Beverly Jenkins takes us to visit our old friends in Henry Adams, Kansas. It’s lovely to fellowship and partake in the many stories of love, passion, humor, suspense and compassion that our literary friends have experienced. In this community the reader will find themselves feeling as a member of this unique community and the compelling lives of the characters. Ms. Jenkins reminds us of the history of the town from its slavery days of the 1800’s to current times.
I appreciated a few things that made this narrative special. I really enjoyed that the characters were older individuals in their sixties, instead of the usual twenty / thirtyish characters.
One character is a powerful billionaire whose role is to re-construct the town by bringing it into the 21st century. She needs to build roads, schools, recreation centers and other infrastructural elements. What warmed my heart was that the billionaire was a woman, Bernadine Brown. Bernadine becomes involved with Malachi July and she takes very good care of him and his best friend Clay. Malachi’s ego gets in the way of wise decision-making, which leads him into a few misguided decisions that cost him in ways he could not foresee. Will he have the aptitude to rebuild trust and gain forgiveness for his bad choices? Only time will tell.
There is much more drama winding throughout the community of Henry Adams. A second time for love enters the picture perhaps for old high school crushes, divorcees lonely for companionship. The emotional rollercoaster climbs and dips the bumps of life in this small mid-western town. As with many small towns gossip and misunderstanding flourish as tongues wag in beauty salons and barbershops. Within this gem of a book Ms. Jenkins combines many lies as well as forgiveness. This keeps us readers up late at night reading until the last punctuation mark.
Reading “Second Time Sweeter” will delight your heart and spirit and I think it is worthy of your attention.
