The uniqueness of something that can impact ones state of being is often labelled as an affliction. That could be a struggle or constant distress. In this delightful narrative by Marilee Brothers “Affliction” may present the reader a different point of view.
“Affliction” demonstrates how an individual's intuition can play a major role in the manner by which a person's life unfolds. This artfully crafted story focuses a bright light on the family coping skills during great losses. Such as life, energy and heritage. It shows how a family's life lessons of coping can lead to love being etched into the soul.
There are so many deceptive activities that run beneath the roots of every plant and tree of life in “Affliction”. These undercurrents can often dictate how someone functions as one roams about the universe. In “Affliction” the characters are skillfully created to connect with the reader. The plot is complex and intriguing, which keeps the audience engaged. Multiple surprises crop up before the eyes of the reader, permitting their imaginations the latitude to roam wild.
The major characters are so diverse, which in my opinion adds more life to the narrative.
Honor Melanie Sullivan has a special gift but often thinks of it as an affliction. She is a twin, however, the traumatic death of her sister forever places Mel's life in an altered state. Melanie's strong determined persona for righteousness is the fuel that ignites whenever she witnesses or her intuitive side vibrates around areas of injustices especially if it involves abusive situations centered around young defenseless women and children.
There is something "fishy in Denmark" which is in the town of 3 Peaks, Oregon where money talks and the Have and Have Nots follow the usual pattern for victimization.
Billy the Kid aka William McCarty, her sidekick on many occasions discovers an underground operation that drives Mel's blood to a boiling point. Inciting her to leap upon her "white horse" to kick butt and take names later. It is just a little something in her DNA, the secret talent that she inherited.
Kendra and Aida, Eddie, Destiny, Dr. Breen, Steve and Uncle Paco are strong secondary personas that make “Affliction” hang together like clothes placed nicely on a clothesline. One can't run around naked every day. :-0
The paranormal element is key to this story along with intrigue. Ms. Brothers weaves these threads throughout the theme. It is done magically and flawlessly. Honor Melanie and her dad Estefan Delgado's bond was deeper than Mel realized and she had something to gain from their blood relationship.
The range of emotions are high spirited from stoic, aggravation, protective, instinctive, exasperation, fear, euphoria, sensuous and gratification.
I must admit I was dutifully engulfed in every single emotion as the characters embarked on their missions.
Affliction gave me a different outlook on the word. Could it be what one considers an affliction maybe a misunderstood gift? Can the Haves get their due desserts for willfully breaking the law as a Have Nots?
"Affliction" is a 4.5 star book and I will look for more of Marilee Brothers novels to enjoy.
Twenty-two year old Honor Melanie (Mel) Sullivan has an affliction. Due to childhood trauma and inappropriate social behavior, she is diagnosed with Aspergers, a form of autism. But, Mel knows Aspergers is not her true affliction. She prefers not to gaze into a person’s eyes because she is a soul reader, and what she sees can be frightening. It can also get Mel into trouble.
After a brush with the law, Mel leaves her family home in Southern California and travels to Oregon where she meets Harley-Davidson riding William McCarty (Billy the Kid) and stumbles upon a human trafficking/baby-selling scheme involving a foreign girl from Kazakhstan, and others. Even though Mel's life is in danger, she won't stop until she finds the answers that will help those unable to help themselves.
