The Secret Of The Emerald Sea

A Magical Sea-Voyage

As an avid reader, I try to broaden my book genres so I snatched The Secret of the Emerald Sea up hoping it would introduce me to a new way of reading. Did it? I am not quite sure. This story is listed as a Young Adult book, yet I believe it should be in the teens and pre-teens genre. I compared it side-by-side with many other YA books, and The Secret of the Emerald Sea has a childlike feel to it. I hate to write this because this book deserves to be read, but I am not sure which age level will enjoy it more.

The Secret of the Emerald Sea written by Heather Matthews is an adventure story, as well as a love story. Jane, the main character, just fourteen years old has a strange connection to the sea. She has always been comforted by the rain, and something about the Emerald Sea has always captivated her attention. One night, Jane sneaks out of her grandmother’s place and runs down to the sea. Once there, Jane dives in and magical things happen.

What Jane believed to be true is not. Is she or is she not human? Is she a magical sea creature? Or is she a lost girl who is mourning the death of her mother? All of these questions are answered, so you the readers must check The Secret of the Emerald Sea out.

Matthews did write a very enjoyable story, and I do recommend it be read. The divide between teen books and young adult books is quite challenging, and this is why I marked the book down in points. Matthews could have used more descriptions to detail the world she created. I really love books that are so descriptive I feel like I am in the story. The Secret of the Emerald Sea left much to be desired. I knew of this magical world, yet I did not feel like I was there with Jane.

At 269 pages, The Secret of the Emerald Sea is a quick, yet enjoyable read.

Until next time,

Happy Reading!
