What the what?!?!
That was my jaw-dropping reaction after finishing The Alchemy of Forever by Avery Williams. How, what, where, when, and oh-my-gosh why? From the amazing concept, to the heart-pounding execution, Williams’ delivers punch after loving punch in this great YA novel. Book one in a series has left me breathless and wanting more!
With an evil villain, to an awesome protagonist, The Alchemy of Forever is sure to please a vast amount of readers. I’ve read some exciting reincarnation books, but this one is so different it stands out to me. It all starts when lead character Seraphina runs into Cyrus, the hunky (yet evil) boy one fateful night. Starting out in the 1300’s, readers are treated to a brief history of how Seraphina’s life is changed forever.
Cyrus is the boy she was starting to fall in love with, however that all changes the night he saves her with a strange potion. He claims it will give her immortality. His claim is correct. From that day on, Seraphina is able to swap bodies with anyone she wants. The Alchemy of Forever then begins in modern times. Hundreds of years after Seraphina has been inflicted with this gift, she’s ready to put it all to an end. She’s broken off all ties with Cyrus. He’s not a nice guy. He’s evil, he’s ruthless, and he’ll stop at nothing to get her back. Deciding to once and for all end her life, Seraphina ends up in the body of a dying girl.
From here The Alchemy of Forever is such a great read. It’s a little bit of everything. I thoroughly enjoyed reading how Seraphina learns to be a girl in the modern era. William’s did a fine job bringing the funny, as well as bringing the serious. With a great (and potent) blend of a little of this, and a little of that, this book works. It’s somewhat magical.
The ending of this book left my heart pounding, and then a little bit shattered. I cannot wait for the next book to get here. This ending? I was not expecting. I’m more than a little devastated that I didn’t see it coming. I would have gone inside the pages and re-written it. That is a testimony to the skills of Williams!
Seraphina’s first love made her immortal…her second might get her killed.Incarnation is a new series that introduces a fresh mythology perfect for fans of bestselling series like The Immortals by Alyson Noel and Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
After spending six hundred years on earth, Seraphina Ames has seen it all. Eternal life provides her with the world’s riches, but at a very high price: innocent lives. No longer able to bear the guilt of what she’s done, Sera escapes from Cyrus and vows to never kill again.
Then sixteen-year-old Kailey Morgan gets into a horrific car accident right in front of her, and Sera accidentally takes over her body. For the first time, Sera finds herself enjoying the life of the person she’s inhabiting—and falls for the human boy who lives next door. But Cyrus will stop at nothing until she’s his again, and every moment she stays, she’s putting herself and the people she’s grown to care for in great danger. Will Sera have to give up the one thing that’s eluded her for centuries: true love?
