Simon Lowrie’s “Marianne!” is a tale reminiscent of years gone by. His prose and descriptive elements impact this work magnificently. “Marianne” revolves around four characters: Simon, Marianne, Mark and Sophie. A tale of dominance and submission, deftly and aptly written, draws the reader in to four very different and complex lives struggling to find the perfect balance.
Simon and Marianne have been together for years. Not necessarily on a ‘friends only’ basis, they rely upon one another. Marianne meets Mark after she broke up with an abusive boyfriend. Both Simon and Mark can agree on one thing: Marianne’s wild side must be curbed for her own protection. However, Mark is not content with Simon’s inclusion.
Sophie is a nineteen year old quintessential perfect submissive. She completes Simon in a way that Marianne does not. She is self-possessed enough to know that she will never be first for Simon and that position is relegated to Marianne.
“Marianne!” exhibits light dominance practices and Lowrie’s prose is subjective but the detail and beauty of his writing draws the reader along. The first chapters were onerous but once the story was fully fleshed out, it was impossible to set the book aside.
