I admit it. I'm a sucker for a fated mates story. I've read a lot of them and this is one of my favorites. I thought it was really well done. The story starts with Zev as an adult explaining to his family that he is not going to participate in their matchmaking because he knows who his true mate is. Two problems. His mate is a human and is a man.
The story then goes back to when Zev and Jonah are young boys. I loved how the author did this. Zev's wolf is attracted to Jonah when they are just toddlers. Not in a sexual way mind you, but just senses that they are supposed to be near each other. Something about the blonde boy fascinates him and his wolf understands on some basic level that it needs to protect Jonah. As the years go on the boys grow up and are close friends every step of the way. In their teens they realize that the draw between them is not just friendship but is sexual. Zev realizes they are true mates but Jonah does not have any idea. Zev decides that Jonah needs to grow up without this pressure and to go away to college, have life experiences, etc. The separation is extremely hard on both of the young men and the trip back to each other is often painful.
I thought the author did an excellent job developing these characters. We saw them from childhood on so I felt very attached to them both. It was a unique spin on things to have them come together as small children. Some of the scenes of them together as pup and boy were very touching. The story flowed well and seeing so much of their pasts helped you to understand the dynamics of their present day situation. The romance itself was both really sweet and then pretty hot when they finally came together. My only complaint was that they were apart for a really long time when Jonah went away to school. I found myself frustrated that Zev didn't step up earlier and let Jonah know exactly what was going on. Zev was a little too self sacrificing for my liking. In the end though it was a love story that I will remember for some time. Some of the basic plot of true mates was tried and true but the author put such a unique spin on different aspects that he/she made this story really stand out. If you enjoy shifter stories and/or stories about people fated to be together I highly recommend this book.
